My thought for the day (or rant, whichever comes first)
Today, my issue has to do with those "Support Our Troops" bumper stickers and magnets. Whenever I see them, I get a little upset. Not because I disagree with them, but because I can't imagine there would be people out there who openly don't support our troops.
Are there people out there that blatantly don't support the armed forces? If so, why? I don't understand.
Is it because you dislike the war we are in? Or just war in general? Because that would make a lot of sense. I'm guessing you also dislike the idea of your house burning down, so you must not support our fire fighters too. And the thought of being robbed makes you angry, so you should clearly not support our police. Obviously, the people who are doing the dirty work are the cause for the thing they are trying to fight/prevent.
I wish there was a font called "Sarcasm", as I would have just used it. But I guess I can't expect much from those people who wouldn't support the troops. These are the same people who dislike our current president because he keeps drafting people (true story).
This leads to another issue. I don't think supporting our troops makes you a special person, and by displaying your "pride" you are better than the average person (who clearly doesn't support our troops, because they don't have a magnet!).
Also, the people who I talk to that feel bad for the troops. Every day it's "bring our troops home" this and "I can't believe they have to spend the holidays fighting" that. Sorry. I have three words for you: VOLUNTARY ARMED FORCES. These people CHOSE to be in the military. In doing so, they knew the consequences. And if they really wanted to come home early, they could. The military isn't going to shoot them for not wanting to fight anymore, just shame their military record. You act as if they were arrested and forced to fight overseas.
So, in the end, I do support all our armed forces, and we are lucky to have such a good military, but I do not feel sorry for them, just as I do not feel sorry for the person who volunteered to test uranium pants and got some form of cancer.
Am I too harsh?
